Thank you for these reviews! Sag Harbor by Colson Whitehead is going on my list — it sounds like the perfect read for me. The Summer Book is one of my favorites! Interesting that you didn’t rate it — is it beyond rating, or just tricky to rate? And with Where the Crawdads Sing, I felt the same and never quite got all the fuss.
Sag Harbor is an amazing book; I will be excited to hear your thoughts! And yay to The Summer Book! I typically refrain from rating older books because they tend to carry a lot of cultural weight. They don't always abide by contemporary conventions of what makes a "good" book, and often reflect outdated or offensive perspectives, which can make them difficult to rate by modern standards. When reading classic lit, I try to think about it within the context of its time in all of its complexity instead of imposing my personal rating system. In this case, The Summer Book also holds personal sentimental value, which makes it hard to rate objectively.
